Where It All Began
Our original About Us, written when the business first started.
Thanks for checking out Macdonald Edinburgh Electrical (MEE) on the web. My name’s David Macdonald, the person behind the company. I planned to start my own electrical business for many years and in 2014 that plan became reality.
My career in the electrical trade got going after the decision to head to college and get a Higher National Certificate in electrical engineering. With the theory in the bag, I shortly started with a small local electrical company which gave me both practical hands-on and theoretical application of current electrical requirements from BS7671 (electrical safety requirements), as well as understanding the latest in building standards.
Setting and then realising your goals are important. For MEE it will be about encouraging the next generation of electricians. We plan to take on an apprentice, showing them the ropes, whilst getting them a thorough grounding in theory through college. Helping young people into work and starting to achieve their own goals is a core part of the mission for MEE.
MEE is a professional company dedicated to the highest standards of service and safety in every aspect of our trade, a newly established electrical business that can be trusted to cater for all your electrical needs. All staff are fully qualified 17th edition electricians that can offer 24hr cover.
MEE is growing and looking into opportunities with renewable energy products and services. Renewable energy is becoming more and more important to reduce the carbon footprint that we are making on our planet.
With the help of you, our customers, providing feedback, reviews, comments or even shared snaps on the services we provide to you, we will grow, learn and be the first port of call when you need assistance with any electrical services.
Finding a reliable, trustworthy electrician that is on time is hard, but I am here to tell you that MEE is here to offer that service to you and others.

The Journey
Growing With the Industry
From traditional electrical work to solar PV, battery storage and renewable energy — while keeping the same values.

2026
Twelve Years Later
An update from David Macdonald.
It’s quite something reading back over what I wrote when I first started Macdonald Edinburgh Electrical in 2014.
Back then, I had a few simple ambitions. I wanted to build a business people could trust, take on an apprentice, and eventually move into renewable energy.
At the time, they were just goals I was working towards.
Twelve years later, I can look back and say we’ve achieved them.
From One Electrician to a Family Business
When I wrote that original About Us, I talked about wanting to give the next generation an opportunity to learn the trade.
What I didn’t know back then was that one day I’d be doing exactly that with my own son.
Today, Ryan works alongside me as my apprentice.
We work together on everything from small electrical jobs to complete solar PV and battery storage installations. From the first site visit to the final testing and commissioning, we’re often the two people seeing the entire job through.
It’s something I’m incredibly proud of.
Not just because we’re building a business, but because we’re building something together.
The Move Into Renewable Energy
In 2014, renewable energy was something I hoped to get involved in.
Today, it’s one of the biggest parts of our business.
We’ve grown from a traditional electrical contractor into a company specialising in solar PV, battery storage, EV chargers and renewable energy installations, while continuing to provide the electrical services that started it all.
We’re NICEIC Approved Contractors and MCS-certified installers, and we continue to invest in our skills and knowledge as the industry develops.
The technology has changed enormously over the years, but our approach hasn’t.
We still believe that whether it’s replacing a socket or installing a complete solar and battery system, every job deserves the same care and attention.
No job is too small to be done properly.
The Lessons Along the Way
Running a business for twelve years hasn’t always been easy.
There have been long days, difficult jobs, setbacks and plenty of occasions where things haven’t gone to plan.
But I’ve always believed that the only way through a challenge is to keep going, learn from it and come out better on the other side.
We’re not perfect, and I wouldn’t pretend otherwise.
What I can promise is that we care about our work, our customers and the reputation we’ve spent years building.
Our name is on every job we complete, and that means something to us.
Looking Towards the Future
Back in 2014, I wanted to build a business I could be proud of.
Today, I get to work alongside my son, install technology that helps people take control of their energy, and continue developing a company that started with little more than an ambition and a determination to succeed.
There’s still a long way I want to go.
I still have goals I haven’t achieved, and I’m certainly not ready to slow down.
But one thing will never change.
We’ll continue turning up, taking pride in our work, treating people’s homes with respect and doing everything we can to deliver the service our customers deserve.
Thank you to everyone who’s supported Macdonald Edinburgh Electrical over the years. Whether you’ve trusted us with a small repair, a complete installation or simply recommended us to someone else, you’ve played a part in our journey.
And to everyone who’s yet to work with us, we look forward to meeting you.
